Drifting is a short file that I was the director of photography and editor for. This project holds a special place in my heart because it was the first passion project I ever did in university. The story follows the heartache that comes when friendships drift apart and explores the specific type of pain that follows. This is a coming-of-age short that is suited for all audiences but is targeted at teens and young adults. Kathleen Burgess was the director and writer for this project, and Chris Van Haren and Aidan Peet were the sound recordists.
The process of planning this film was done very professionally using the knowledge I was learning as a part of my undergrad in Media Production at Ryerson. I made sure to make detailed shot lists with the director and writer, location scout, help make props, and even pitch the project to locations in order to use their space for filming. Check out some of that below!
We had the vision to have scenes of the movie be captured on a vintage camera, in this was going to be crucial for flashbacks, and the end of the movie montage here is what we used for inspiration. In this grid, the top two pictures were what we wanted our film to look like during this scene and the still underneath it is an example of how it turned out looking in the finished product of the film!
Below you can see the shot list I made for this project and used during production
Since this film was about two friends that have been close since they were children we decided to make a scrapbook prop that was used in the film. Below you can see the process of making the scrapbook and how it was used in the film!
The finished product of this film was a success! You can watch it down below. Not only was I very happy with the outcome of this project, but it was also featured in the “Lift-Off Global Network Film Festival”. This was a huge honor, considering this was the first short film I ever made.
